Cosmos Planetarium

In partnership with Cosmos Planetarium, we organised an “out of this world” day of fun and activities for children followed by an evening of astronomical learning and stargazing for adults featuring Prof. John C Brown OBE, RSE Astronomer Royal for Scotland who has subsequently become a Patron of ASSET.

Following the success of the partnership event with Cosmos, it was a natural step to work more closely with them and a merger was agreed effective from 31st March 2018. Since then Cosmos have engaged with thousands of people of all ages and walks of life in the planetarium at schools, science centres, museums, community centres, sports hall and church halls throughout Scotland, England and Wales.

Cosmos has also partnered with a diverse array of groups to engage the public in astronomy and space themed activities including: National Parks (Loch Lomond & The Trossachs, Cairngorms – Tomintoul & Glenlivet, and the Yorkshire Dales), Dynamic Earth (Edinburgh Science Centre), National Museum of Scotland, Royal Astronomical Society, Royal Concert Hall Glasgow, Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellows, Care for Carers, Solarsphere (Music and Astronomical Festival), several independent schools, many public schools and several shopping centres.

Steven and James have raised awareness of Cosmos and the goals of ASSET and ASK on a national and international level at the International Planetarium Society (Toulouse, France) and the British Association of Planetaria (Birmingham UK) conferences. Steven is also on the Steering Group of ‘Universal Space’ – a programme funded and supported by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). The first goal is to provide sector leading ‘full-dome’ content for planetariums on the subject of the James Webb Space Telescope. This project is supporting the UK planetarium community to build partnerships, provide sector-leading CPD for planetarium professionals, share STFC stories and science and showcase the considerable impact of fixed and mobile planetariums across the nation.
